carolinablueimages.com: Who I am

Portrait or Personal Image - Jan Baucom

My first camera, a Kodak Instamatic 110, had the square flash bulb on the top that rotated when you snapped a picture. And it only had four flashes before you had to change the bulb. Although the equipment of photography is forever changing, my love of being behind the camera stays the same.

I bought my first 35mm film camera around 1996 when a friend of mine asked me to take pictures at a motor-cross race. I haven’t put my camera down since. If anything, I have it with me as much as possible and I take pictures everywhere I go.

With the birth of my son in 2005, I found that I not only wanted to take pictures of him all of the time, but I also wanted to begin to focus on the art of photography. I wanted to find what the artist inside me had to offer. I am forever learning about photography and will continue to do what I love….taking pictures.

I approach my photography the same way that I approach my life….SIMPLE. I prefer to catch a cute smile or a candid shot that captures an emotional moment. Emotions, expressions, and timing are key to taking a photograph rather than just a snapshot. I like SIMPLE props like a chair or a small ball, a favorite blanket, if any at all. I like for my photos to have an emotional impact and tell a story about the individual and to do this I try to limit props and take pictures in a natural environment.

As a photographer and artist, I strive to capture the moments of life that will last forever.
